One of the most common mistakes that people make when covering grey hair, is for some reason, they put hair colour on that is just too warm for most european skin. I see it all the time, clients with brassy, orangery undertones. My philosophy is different! I flatten and cool clients hair down so its as close as possible to what you could have been born with. I tend to cover the hair with a neutral base, like a mousey tone, but then the magic follows. We then decorate throughout the base with pretty blonde high/lowlights and or balayage. Once you get this mix right, you will never change it!

I tend to do the base every 6 – 8 weeks, then probably Balayage twice a year which keeps the base fresh and interesting – it’s a great combination. It can give an instant ten years younger feel. To look after this combo, use moisture products for coloured hair.

Get yourself somewhere fabulous with a great mentor!

Off the high-street or smaller salons are a GRT start to teach you ‘bread and butter’ work, a good solid blow dry can be the perfect base for anything, so somebody that can do traditional hairdressing is worth their weight in gold in any salon. It is this vital prep knowledge that you’ll see backstage at most shows or for any good photo-shoot. I always make sure I have a key member of my team with this experience and skillset and that is certainly what I have done in my careers past.

BUT, if you want to progress further and wider into the industry then really you need to be alongside somebody who does the type of work that you want to end up doing.

For me, when I met my old boss, he was doing all of that in the industry so i was just his ‘bag carrier’ and I went along to everything and absorbed everything. I loved it! The biggest piece of advice for a young hairdresser is to make sure you work with and alongside the best! Choose somebody you admire, someone you respect, someone you look up to and someone that has already achieved. Offer your services for free if need be – unfortunately sometimes this can be your way in, but you can’t put a price on that type of knowledge that you will learn and therefore build your blocks for your career.

So firstly, you would need to make sure you have a fantastic range of ‘anti-brassy’ shampoos such as ‘A touch of Silver’ by PRO:VOKE.

You need to make sure that you have top ups of blonde regularly, but you will need to have a full head every now and again so that you can clean out the residue.

You will need to make sure that you have a go-to product on your bathroom shelf such as ‘Igora Colour Gloss Mousse’ in ‘moonshine’ that is a direct tone that will knock out the yellow and last longer than a shampoo and conditioner.

Tone shots are great because they will add moisture, shine, but also they have them in a blue #VioletFamily.

Should You Colour Your Hair At Home?

I get asked this question almost every day and in fact yes i do think people can colour their hair at home but it has to be within reason. Being a colour correction specialist, what i see people doing wrong most of the time is they simply choose the wrong box, the colour choice is what we have trained for years for and it can be tricky, the consultation is hugely important! Some of the best colourists i know struggle with colour correction. It is such a difficult process. It is very intricate and very delicate.

Therefore, I would say, if you are colouring your hair at home, just choose something simple. Glosses and root touch up’s are absolutely fine. The moment you start thinking about going lighter, going darker, no matter how subtle – should only be done by a Pro – Colour Removal should only ever be done by a specialist or it can end up costing you a fortune to get it corrected!

Tips to Become a Successful Young Colourist!

In Colour, basic or advanced, it’s essential to know the basics first.

With me, I absolutely love the theory side and most people don’t, they find it boring but i was fascinated by it! So my attention was really focused on that. I say to my team all of the time, if you know what is happening with hair, inside out, you will never be in a position that you can’t fix it and so the theory side is crucial.

From a colour perspective you have got to know what you are doing, and so from there on yes you can break the rules until the cows come home, but unless you know them to start with, you can’t do that! So i always say to my team up to a level 2 or 3, abide by the rules and stick to them until you have mastered your craft. There after do what you want but with full respect to the hair’s condition and of course your clients requests – its only then that you can put your personality and your stamp on your work, but you must not, and i believe very strongly about this, you must not do that until you know what you are doing because you can end up in serious trouble!
